Getting that balance between work and life is not easy, given that you will always want to earn more to be able to provide more for your family. However, while we always rationalize the things we do, some are just not helping towards improving the quality of life we have. If you work 10 to 12 hours a day and bring home some more work in the weekend, you should start asking yourself why you are doing this.
While compensation pays, you should also look at other factors that will directly affect your life outside work. If you are spending two or more hours a day going to and from work, remember that this can be time spent playing with your kids. You may be earning a lot, but you can never buy back the time lost in that traffic or on the road.
Of course, you need to like your boss and colleagues, at a minimum. Working for and around someone you dislike will surely be a drag, and you will bear your family and husband to death by complaining about the bad day you’ve had at the office, everyday.
Then, check the time you spend working. It should not be more than what is acceptable to you and your family. You need to set boundaries, or else you will never find that balance.
Remember that you are just one of the many members of the organization you work for, no matter how critical your position is. They have survived without you before, they will do so again. The business will not crumble just because you stopped working late at night. On the other hand, you are the only parent of your child, and everything depends on you. So better make the right choice.
