The way you communicate – speak and write – is an indication of how good you are, particularly when you want to be employed or even when you are running your own business. Most job contracts can be decided with an interview, and it starts with a letter you may have written, or by submitting your curriculum vitae which you have also written. Even after you are employed, a lot rests on the way you communicate – the way you converse with your colleagues and bosses, the way you do business presentations, even the way you send an email or a text message!
The truth is, you are evaluated most of the time, by the way you communicate, even in school, in businesses, in every aspect of life. That is why it is very important to improve your vocabulary, so that you can have better chances of getting heard and listened to. This doesn’t have to be so complex, or expensive. All you need is determination and discipline, and you will find yourself a better speaker, and writer, with just five minutes a day.
Aside from reading books to familiarize yourself with proper written language, you can also go online and look for internet-based dictionaries. You can focus on one to three words a day. Find the words you always use and look for their synonyms and the different ways they can be used. You can also ask a trusted friend or your mother or brother, to be your spot checker. Ask them to count the many times you use improper phrases, such as, “like, actually, as if” and similar expressions so that you can correct them the next time.
